Reigning Singapore DJ Champ Ate the Rest of the Contestants Alive at Zouk

So I was invited to attend the DJ Championship Singapore Finals at Zouk and took some rather exclusive photos on the lovely ladies from TDK Life on Record.  Gosh, I love my ‘job’.

Now, why would I wish to spoil the photo with my mug shot?  So I deployed my humble assistant journalist, my de facto model to record the moment of “yes we were there”.  Right after the shots, Cynthia grabbed my camera in one swift motion.  I was shocked by her eagerness to view my quite-possibly-award-winning pictures of the evening.  She held up the camera asked me point-blank with a smile, “I don’t look too bad compared to these models, do I?”

Uh-oh.  Red alert.  It is like that “Am I fat?” question that we guys have to face constantly in our lifetime – from our girlfriends, or sisters, or sisters’ girl friends, or girl friends’ sisters.  If I could choose, going back in time, between …

… the TDK Life on Record headsets these models were holding and my Sennheiser …

As the music was blasting on the dance floor, we tried out the two (headphone) models – ST-200, the street style Hi-fi studio headphones that comes in 3 designs (S$29.90) and ST-Pro400, the Professional DJ studio headphones (S$59.90) – and I must say they are pretty value for money.  They shielded most of the noise out and I was happily bobbing my head up and down to the music these (TDK Life on Record) models were playing.

As for the event, I don’t know which one is more distractive – the constant smooching from the couple less than a few inches away from my face or the constant technical problems faced by the DJs.  Nevertheless, it was eye opening to see them (the contestants) in action.  The blending of sound from the vinyl records played from two different turntables, the control of volume and speed and the precise timing of two music sources that can either be identical or different, the creation of the mad scratching sound, and the stop and go of the turntable in fabricating a dramatic entrance and exit feel – all orchestrated by the magical hands of the DJs.  And that’s not all.  The good ones are those who come with a personality, a pair of calm hands, and the creativity to construct a musical piece that rallies the mood of the crowd.  It is a skill, for sure.  Even with the markings on the vinyl records, things can go wrong.

When the reigning DMC Singapore champ, DJ Inquisitive, took the stage, he practically ate the rest of the contestants alive.  The crowd went wild.  Not surprisingly, he won the finals and will represent Singapore in the battling of the World Supremacy title in London.

Congratulations to all the contestants who made it out there on the stage.  And to DJ Inquisitive, best of luck in UK.  I will upload one video I have taken.  Perhaps on a Friday evening to get y’all in a party mood.

PS: Zouk cardholders get an S$10 discount off the TDK Life on Record headphones (ST-Pro400, ST-Pro300 and NC-100 models) at Cyberactive outlets.  Check them out if you are looking for one.

7pm – 5am: Of Dinner And Dance, Butter Factory, And Zouk

Till today, I still think that the best thing I can take away from my nine-to-five is the friendship I make. Some feel that the friends they meet as they get older are not as real or as close to those they met when they were young. The way I see it, as time goes by, we bound to lose touch with some good friends of ours. Actively making new friends and putting time and effort in nurturing friendship – old and new – is likely to be the only way to counter that. Some told me that they prefer to live their lives as hermits. My take is, we all want to be alone at times but none of us want to be lonely.

This year’s Dinner and Dance was different. It was a whole set of new colleagues and amongst them, two were my ex-colleagues. We were like having a mini-reunion during the Dinner and Dance. When the clock struck twelve, we headed to Butter Factory to have a real reunion with friends I met from the previous company. The party was smashing and Butter Factory ranks pretty high in my list of favorite clubbing scenes. After Butter Factory was closed at three, some of us moved to Zouk. Believe it or not, it was my first time stepping into Butter Factory … and into Zouk as well.

So This Is The Arena …

Previously, I did a coverage on Attica. If there is one thing good about FHM or Maxim (besides the Dawn Yang pictures … gasp!), it is some of the write-ups on the clubs in Singapore. I read about The Arena and I really wanted to check it out. So I did … with Cynthia and our buddy KF.

Coincidentally, there was some big event in the Clarke Quay area last weekend (The Straits Time did a coverage on that) and besides firework display, there were some dancers in the open area as well as some Salsa singers. If Clarke Quay is going to be so happening, I am going to station there every week.

Oh … again … time for caption. This time round, up and down and left to right (click onto thumbnail to enlarge).

(1) A couple swinging in mid-air doing their dangerous routines, (2) The Salsa singers, (3) The first band in The Arena at 10pm, (4) Cynthia and I right outside The Arena … no cover charge! (5) Cynthia and our friend KF … he is a bachelor … ahem, (6) The 2nd band called Madison, (7) I think I like the 2nd band better, (8) because the lead singer is a hottie.

The concept of The Arena is quite unique. There are tables and chairs everywhere. In a way, it is like a sit down live concert. The DJ plays mainstream music (I like!) and as for the bands … they play commercial cover songs. One thing good about The Arena is that they have bands after bands. We entered before 10pm and they have their resident band taking the 10pm slot played for 50 minutes (we like the guitarist) and within 10 minutes, another band from UK took over. We left after midnight and I bet the bands would return and play till wee hours.

There was no cover charge for us. The bands are professional. The only comment I have is that the songs can be a bit outdated (like 3 to 5 years back and some can be considered as oldies like Bangles and Tiner Tuner). Cynthia and I will definitely return … very soon.

The quote of the night? During the break between the band performance (that could be quite loud), KF looked around and casually commented: I need to come back here one day … so many girls here! I bet he will.

PS. Our friend KF is single and available. He is tall, intelligent, sensual, and humorous. If any of you wish to date him, please let me know! I can do the arrangement … gladly so.

So This Is Attica …

I felt special in Attica. I will get to that in a moment.

Out of nowhere, Cynthia begged demanded asked me to take her to Attica since she has not been there before. Huh?! Just the two of us? She then threatened told me nicely that if I don’t, her guy friends will gladly take her there. Okay, she just pressed that “I Win” button. By midnight, we got out of the Clark Quay car park and …

… we were greeted by the smoke coming out from Ministry of Sound (MoS). Or was it? I think there must have been 30 to 40 people outside puffing cigarettes. Maybe that was why the entrance was so smokey. Good news for the non-smoker for sure. That would mean inside the club, we no longer need to put up with second hand smoke. Ain’t that great? I personally love that new law in Singapore.

The entrance of Attica is not that impressive. We paid S$28 per person to have access to both “Attica” (first floor that plays Hip Hop and R&B) and “Attica Too” (second floor that plays house music). The music I must say are way better than MoS. The DJ played music by Sean Paul, Ciara, Gwen Stefani, Justin Timberlake, and etc. It was great. If the DJ was to play Rihanna, that would have been marvelous. Perhaps he did, but …

… we headed upstairs at 1am once the private party was over. The number of speakers hung around the dance floor are overwhelming. My pair of ears had a tough time adjusting to the deafening dance beat. However, I must admit, the music was good. It was not just any House music but House music with melody.

It goes without saying that whenever I go party, something weird will happen. Be it as the new year party (2006) at Insommia Hong Kong when a working girl was being approached or the encounter of the beautiful transvestites at MoS during Christmas party (2006). At “Attica Too”, there are raised platforms at hip level. One time there was an Asian girl with super mini skirt dancing on top of the platform and I saw this Westerner stroking her outer thighs and then her inner thighs while she was dancing. Then came his friend – another muscular dude – who in turn stroked the girl’s inner thighs simultaneously with his friend. That was just so … wrong. That was just so … porn.

That aside, the entire experience has been positive. Attica is a lot smaller compares to MoS but the music is great. Now, why did I feel special at Attica? I looked around the dance floor and could hardly see another Chinese guy around me. There were lots of Western guys (and some Western women) and there were tons of Asian girls. Since I was with Cynthia, it wouldn’t matter either way. But if I was with my guy friends, I would prefer MoS’s crowd any time. I personally don’t think the Singaporeans prefer Attica – at least not the Singaporeans girls for that matter.

A Merry Christmas + Ministry Of Sound!

First, WilfridWong.com and its crew a.k.a. Osbob.com would like to thank all the viewers for your support (erm … Mark you better leave a comment here). Though not many of you leave a comment or two, the hit-rate does tell me that you are somewhere out there. A big thank you and … MERRY X’MAS!

Today, or rather yesterday, Cynthia wanted to go to Church for the Midnight Mass. How can I ever say no to her? So we went and Jesus is indeed popular during Christmas. The Church was crowded and though it was not the best sermon I have heard, the take-home message was: there is hope out there. Just exactly what I need now.

Midway through the Mass, I wrote M-O-S on Cynthia’s palm and it took her several attempts to decipher what MOS means. Ministry of Sound, duh! And so we went, right after the Mass.

It was my maiden trip. Since its opening in Singapore for what seems like a year, I have not stepped into it yet. We parked at the multi-story HDB carpark right next to MOS and parking was a breeze (at about 1am). The queue was non-existence and the admission fee was S$30 per person.

First stop, the big hall of Trance music. There must have been a lot of [electrical] energy out there. I mean, the power of the bass sent each of my internal organ to vibration in unison with the music. And not just my internal organs, but all the people on the dance floor too. The feeling was so surreal. I felt the vibration from within.

Next stop, we climbed up the stairs and the first room we entered played the Eighties music. Actually I did enjoy the music. But when I looked around the room and checked out the girls … erm, I mean women … I mean old ladies … we left the room after one song.

The next room was more promising. It was called Adrenaline or something like that. The music was fast pace with a dude playing trumpet live with the music. Very energetic. Cynthia and I stayed for a while dancing to the beat (she did, not sure about me as I usually take long to warm up).

Then it was the Hip-Hop section. Boy, how we love Hip-Hop. I mean, who doesn’t like Hip-Hop? The hall, too small in my opinion, was so packed with people. Half of the time, we were being squashed by the train of people (yes, people do form into trains) getting in and out of the dance arena. The crowd was younger and dare I say more beautiful people were into Hip-Hop than any kind of music. One time, three very attractive ladies passed by me. They were tall (at least 1.75m) and slender, very fair skin, beautiful complexion, straight fine hair, nice big eyes with nice boobs, sexily dressed, a body to die for … and then one of them spoke with a male voice and another one replied also with a male voice. Oh well …

Overall a smashing Christmas celebration. Cynthia has already talked about New Year Eve celebration at the new St. James Power Station near VivoCity on the way to Ministry of Sound. Stay tuned.

PS. Photo taken while we entered the carpark.
