This is not my usual stuffs, I swear. It’s going to be a fun read. I think there are way more girls who can take horror movies than guys. The question is: why?! Amongst all my guy friends, I seem to be the odd one out who truly enjoy watching horror movies. But I can name you quite a number of my female friends who actually enjoy or don’t mind watching this genre of movie. Unfortunately for me, Cynthia belongs to that 1% who can’t take it. Knowing that asking TK would be a waste of time so I have decided to watch “Body #19” alone – like the last time when I watched “Alone” alone.
There was no popcorn flying to my face this time and I did make a mental note that if the dude in front was to hold a box of popcorn, I would shift seat. On my right was a bunch of girls. On my left was a pair of girls. I am telling you, I bet more than 75% of the audience are girls.
What I observe from the crowd is this: most of the audience comes in large groups. Perhaps they need some emotional support? And there are quite a number of people who are on our own. These are usually the quiet ones. The screaming ones usually come from the groups or at times, the pairs.
What I LOVE about watching a horror movie is really the crowd. I observe that more often than not, in a horror movie setting, you bound to find some pockets of audience who chit-chat throughout the movie. I think they are the scared ones and they chit-chat their way just to divert their attention. And you know there are times when something bad is going to happen on the screen – believe it or not – usually there are one or two persons in the crowd who tend to scream ahead of time (or make certain moaning sound). It is incredible how much entertainment value these people provide and it makes the anticipation more real. Then of course, at times the anticipation leads to nothing … and suddenly … BAMP! … a loud sound and most of the audience will jump out of our seats. These effects usually get me and people usually laugh about it after the act. The most disturbing ones are the scenes that get some of the audience screaming out loud continuously.
And that was what happened to at least one guy and one girl in the theatre. One girl behind me screamed so loud and so long in duration that I thought she was going to pass out. At the end of the movie, thanks to the director who gives the audience one last shock, the girl behind me was screaming and choking. I turned around and she didn’t look well at all.
I wonder why.
To me, “Body #19” lacks the fear factor. I was shocked at most 5 times and those blood scenes, or body-part scenes, or ghost scenes really didn’t get me at all. I can imagine if I was watching this with my buddy Mark, he would pass out seeing so much blood on the screen. The storyline of “Body #19” is good though – full of twists and turns. “Body 19” is from the studio that brought us “Shutter” and “Alone”. “Shutter” is a great movie by the way. I personally don’t think “Body #19” is anywhere near.
But still, I love the crowd!

haha… brother. Unfortunatley, your sis also belongs to that 1%! hehe.. to tell you the truth, I am the one belongs to those who will scream before the horror scene. Yes, you are right that I want to distract myself or get myself more psychologically prepared before the shock! hahaha… 😛
Hey, in the future, instead of going alone, you can invite Benny to join you. His situation is similar to yours as he loves horror film but I will NEVER see this kind of film with him… hehe =D
By the way, I just wonder whether you were too distracted by observing the crowd! haha… :>
You watching movie or watching the crowd? And sum more can count how many times you get shocked! What lah! hehehe…..
ei… notti boy ah. Got Cynthia still can think of having another girl to share the fairy tale room with .
*piak piak* – these are for Cynthia. hehehe…..
Thank you ECL !! 😉
The last horror movie that I can recall watching, and having a deep impression on me, was the original Japanese horror flick The Ring. After that, I swore off horror shows because The Ring had me wondering about my TV set while I was staying alone. These days, I think watching people eat cockroaches on Fear Factor gives me that same feeling as seeing blood on the screen.
Are you sure that girl behind you was not screaming due to something else her boyfriend did? 😉
Your review came in timely!
I was going to watch that in Singapore tomorrow night but now that you mention it’s nowhere near Shutter, I shall give it a miss!
Watched it alone?!
Oh my!!!
I usually watch horror movies to scare myself (don’t ask me why!) and I want to plan a all girls trip to Yangtze theatres to watch some “hum sup” show! I heard it’s fun!
(I am NOT “hum sup”!!!)
Lora – Oh, Benny is into horror movie?! Wow, I may have found myself a new horror movie partner!
Oh wait, you are the type who screams before the horror scene? I shall certainly get you to watch one with me!
ECL – Ha ha ha …Well, I can’t help it if the crowd is so animated! And I swear I did choose the seat but did not choose the crowd! How would I know that there were so many girls who love to watch horror?! 🙂
Cynthia – Erm …
Darkspore – Oh yes, I watched “The Ring” too. Now, that is one decent horror movie.
The girl behind me was with a whole bunch of other girls … ha ha ha.
G – That’s right. I think “Shuttle” is much better. “Body #19” has lots of visual effect though. But these Hollywood effects kind of make it a bit unreal for me. Having said that, there are quite a number of people seemed to have gotten the kick out from it. So if you are the type who love to scare yourself …
Now, back to those “hum sup” movies … we shall take it offline … ha ha ha.
The show must be pretty boring for to look and the audience instead of the show.
And thanks for not inviting me 😀
Kiat – Dude … it is hard not to notice the audience when you are watching a good Asian horror film. As I told Cynthia, it is definitely a whole new experience inside the theater unlike anything you have seen. People do weird things inside like disappearing for a while before coming back, screaming non-stop, talking non-stop, turn their faces or putting their hands over their eyes when the horror scenes are expected to come … all these big movements, all these sounds, how not to notice?!
The show is not boring. Just lacks the fear factor for me. So instead of screaming the heck out of me, I noticed what happened around me 🙂
Hey, my success rate of getting you to watch a horror film is 0% at the moment. Want to give me a single digit rate for a change? 🙂
who? me? get me to see a horror film? no way la… I will either hide behind you all the way… or the worst is… you will be the one screaming as you may get pinched whenever the shock comes… hahahaha… you ask Benny and he will tell you why…. 😛
Lora – Yes way! Don’t worry, I will get Benny as my pinching shielding.
hey there! this is rodrigo from argentina. one of my friends downloaded this film and he said it was awesome. he’s usually wrong… but i heard the movie was made by the same people from “shutter”(which i liked a lot) then i started surfing the net and found this blog. cool review. i read your review about coelho’s frida too.
oh gotta go.
great blog.
Rodrigo – Argentina! I am currently learning Spanish and you may wish to drop a few lines in Spanish for me to practice … lol.
Yes, Body #19 is from the same studio that produces “Shutter”. You have checked out the original Thai version instead of the English remake I suppose? Love it.
Thanks for dropping by. Adiós!
i HATE that remake with every bone in my body(and i borrowed bones of other people to hate it even more) it is so boring… and (i don’t know how to say “exagerada”… i mean… that part of putting salt outside the room with pictures just to meake it creepier… i think that’s poor)
i disliked “the eye” as well-the remake, the original one is one of my favourites.
asian studios are making good movies(ofcourse there are lots of exceptions, but there are some good ones)
you should check out spanish horror movies. they’re making good stuff too.
movies such as “rec” are really cool
Rodrigo – You mean “The Ring”, the Japanese horror? Did the West remake it into “The Eye”? I love “The Ring”. Normally I have a high tolerance of horror films but I didn’t even dare to watch “The Ring 2”!
I don’t think I have seen any Spanish horror movies being imported into the Singapore cinemas. But I will certainly keep a look out for it. Thanks!
no no, i meant “the eye”. the ring is above many things for me. i touch my heart every time i mention it xD. i read the first book and it was awesome. i couldn’t get the rest of them but i will one day.
about spanish films, i think i can look for the link and english subtitles so that you can download it. anyway, i’ve heard they’re making an american version of “REC”.
Rodrigo – Ha ha ha … OK. I will keep a look out. I am pretty hopeless in the whole download affair. Fortunately from time to time, Spanish films do appear here. Have a good weekend!
i had writen something about the movies i’m recomending but there was an error on this page and i lost it all. i0m not gonna write the hole thing again.
here are the links

Rodrigo – Ah, sorry to hear that and thanks for the note. I think that error tends to happen if someone forgets to fill in the necessary info such as email address or name.
Pan’s Labyrinth is great. I watched that with English title!
