… and I love a happy ending too. Although I was cautioned on what the reunification of Orzabal and Smith would be. First thing first, I was so over the fact that they have split up 15 years ago. I think Roland Orzabal survived and I do admire his effort in doing everything on his own.
After all, how can they ever beat the wonderful songs from their past such as “Sowing The Seeds Of Love” and “Everybody Wants To Rule The World”?
Tears For Fears’s new album “Everybody Loves A Happy Ending” definitely lived up to my expectation. In fact, I would (and I have) bought any Tears For Fears new album without knowing what’s inside even if it is 50% more expensive because it is an imported item.
The entire album reminds me what Tears For Fears are capable of making. I have to confess that I did not love the entire album at first listen. Nor did I love their Greatest Hits 82-92 at first listen. I had difficulties in understand why my ex-girlfriend loved the song “Woman In Chains” so much.
With Curt Smith’s new vocal addition, it certainly adds a new dimension to the music. I just love it the more I listen to it.
So, what’s the verdict? I am happy to own yet another one of their CDs. My favourite song? “The Quiet Ones”. Personally, I think it is as good as “Sowing The Seends Of Love”.

I was quite excited about the release but somehow, I have still not heard this!
I have heard Orzabal’s Tomcats Screaming Outside album which was decent, Curt Smith’s Blue Aeroplane EP and solo album previously. Heh.
I love ‘Songs from the Big Chair’ and ‘The Hurting’. A few tracks from ‘Sowing the Seeds of Love’ worked for me but the album hadn’t.
CSC – Oh, if you do like some of Tears for Fears work, you may wish to check it out. I have to admit that I haven’t checked out their solo albums.
Ah, “The Hurting”. How can I forget to mention that song. Love that too.
I really enjoy “Sowing the Seeds of Love” possibly because of the song complexity and the lyrics … I think.
I didn’t like ‘Elemental’ and ‘Cold’ though. I didn’t care for the subsequent albums either.
How does this one compare then?
CSC – I think after the group split, the music is not quite the same. I stay with Tears for Fears mainly because I am a loyal fan and I have a lot of respect on artists who hold out. Just like David Gilmour of Pink Floyd. That album “A Momentary Lapse of Reason” is more or less a solo album.
This latest Tears for Fears album I think is better than any of the album after the band split. May not be a classic in the context of Tears for Fears, but it is a good album after the reunion.
Yes, Ozabal went into a more rock orientation. By the third album, ‘Sowing the Seeds’, there were signs that that he was veering into that direction.
I don’t know about fan loyalty. I like most of the Erasure albums until a bad patch when they released 2-3 bad albums. Likewise, for Depeche Mode. I stopped buying Bjork after two bad albums. I think I have stopped buying a few other artistes too.
Thanks, I will give Tears for Fears a listen then.
CSC – Hey, interestingly you have mentioned Erasure. I have (or had) been a big fan of them till “I Say I Say I Say”. And thereafter, nothing is comparable to what they had before! That’s why although I have bought their latest album (why why why?!) “Light at the End of the World”, it is not featured in my webbie.
Boo!
As for Depeche Mode, I think most likely because I have started loving their work from “Songs of Faith and Devotion” – which many fans turn away from the band thereafter – I can accept all their previous works and have owned every single album of theirs from “Black Celebration” onwards till now, “Playing the Angel”.
Bjork is an odd case. Took me a very long time to fall in love with her music and it is taking even longer to fall out of love with her. I thought “Volta” is pretty good though. That’s why I actually featured it here.
