I really love this Japanese film. I am so feeling her heart – an expression I learn from the film to describe a strong affection in a cyborg-human relationship: I feel your heart! While the Americans are remaking the Korean success “My Sassy Girl”, the director of the aforementioned movie, Kwak Jae-yong, has created “Cyborg She”.
Let’s not look into the technical details of the paradox of time travel. Besides, that would give out spoiler, which I don’t normally do without warning. There are enough twists in “Cyborg She” that keep the audience in suspense all the way to the end. The special effect of the Cyborg looks convincing, so are the scenes from a Japanese small town in the old days as well as ‘that disaster’. The acting of the main actress Haruka Ayase (綾瀬 はるか) looks convincing too. She is so pretty. I read somewhere that she acted in that Japanese movie “Hero”. She has certainly left a deeper impression this time. If I may add, the soundtrack is great too.
Arguably one of the more original movies based on the concept of time, “Cyborg She” is my favorite romance story that involves time travel. Exactly why the director Kwak Jae-yong likes to create female characters that are so overpowering, I have no clue. But I always enjoy watching or reading stories that involve heroines.
If I must pick something to critic, some scenes appear to be repetitive and a bit too lengthy. Then again, with such an eye candy, who really cares?
I have been pondering why titled as such. “I, Robot” came into my mind. If I think along that line, “Cyborg She” seems fine. Time to wait for the DVD to be out! Below is the trailer, with Chinese subtitles.

I was at the video store just now and saw this movie too! I went for thrillers rather than a romantic one.
ECL – The DVD is selling at a video store?! I watched it on big screen … sure it was same same? Hmmm …
DVD is out?! I may go for romance-comedy…once in a while.
Now I am tempted to watch this show. I have watched something related, its called “Absolute Boyfriend” and I really like it – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absolute_Boyfriend 🙂
Tigerfish – Hmmm … I seriously don’t think the DVD is out so soon. Maybe our friend ECL was referring to another show, like “My Sassy Girl”?
Si Ying – Sounds interesting! Japanese are the creative bunch, I think.
Ya they are! They are often so much more vibrant and colourful and ahead of us in say tv drama, pop singers, even IT gadgets!
Si Ying – I think I should live in Japan for a good number of years to immerse myself into the culture.
Oh I definitely would love to. In fact, I think I am open to staying at any other cities in the world for a while, say a couple of years. To experience a different kind of living. If I can find a job that sends me overseas, I will go!
Si Ying – Yes, you should. I always tell my friends at work that if they have a chance to work overseas at the initial phase of their careers, do so to expand the horizon. The journey may be tough but we often remember the good things a few years after the event.
I have done my share of traveling and now very happy to station in Singapore. You may wish to join a consulting type of job? They tend to send people around the world. Or a MNC preferably with HQ in Singapore? Getting a transfer is not that hard.
Yap but a consulting job would probably require someone with more working experiences than me? All along I thought what I am currently doing seems rather restrictive (financial related issues such as costing/modeling/evaluation in IT/telecom regulatory environment) in terms of opening doors to (1) consulting, (2) other telecom related and/or (3) financial related positions haha. Sounds depressing.
Si Ying – Consulting business certainly takes in fresh grads. The stuff you are doing is pretty good. The key is to be able to move your job nature across industry while maintaining your core skills. Then you can fix your industry and expand your skill set.
Ha I hope I am able to do so. I guess I need to work more on my presentation skills. Plus I am not good at making small talks, which does matter at work I guess.
Si Ying – Oh, presentation skill is a very good skill to have. Some training helps. I find that practicing in front of the mirror helps a lot too. I know many people find this odd and tedious. But I do practice in front of the mirror and even rehearse in a toilet cubicle (too much details?!) prior to a big presentation.
As for “small talks”, it is to do with social skill I think. You are an interesting person from what I read. You shouldn’t have too much of a difficulty to connect to people 🙂
When it comes to a proper presentation I can do it with lots of practice. But say normal times in say dept meeting or interviews I tend not to perform. Bleah!
Haha I am glad u find me interesting. But it takes a while for me to warm up with people. If I dont, I have problems engaging in small talks with ppl I am not familiar with, especially on topics that I have absolutely no idea, say “If LCD is better or plasma”, “which expressway to get to which place”
Si Ying – I am usually quite open to a variety of conversational topics. But there are topics that I will definitely be switched off … like how to raise a kid … So, there you go.
Great film, however, I could not stand the “feel my heart” bits. That was way too sappy… YUCK! If they cut the sappy bits as well as the silliness, then this is one great movie. Well any movie involving cyborgs and time travel is great.
ICEBreaker – Ya, like my minor critic to this movie, some bits may not be necessary, a bit too lengthy. Then again, I think it is an enjoyable (perhaps memorable as well?) film.
wilfrid, You can get the all-region English subtitled DVD at HKFLIX.com. It is a 2-disc digipak that also includes the soundtrack. Personally, I thought the music was pretty cool.
Steve – Thanks for the tips! I will keep that in mind if I can’t get mine in Singapore!
