Sky Of Love (Koizora) – Starring Yui Aragaki (新垣結衣)

Sky of Love (Koizora)

I can’t help but to draw similarities between my favourite Japanese star YUI and the 19 years old model turned actress turned singer Yui Aragaki that go slightly deeper than just a name resemblance and a birthday that is only 3 months apart. Both starred in a rather sad movie (“Midnight Sun” for YUI), both look so pure and cute and innocent, sound so pure and cute and innocent, and both released a studio album after the show (I will review Yui Aragaki’s new album in my next post and YUI’s albums are “From Me to You” and “Can’t Buy Me Love”) with very similar vocal texture as well.  But as a true fan of YUI, what do I make of Yui Aragaki?

Music talent to be addressed in a separate post, Yui Aragaki does have acting talent for the romance drama genre.  It is hard not to fall in love with her on the screen (though I must say, Cynthia was more delighted by the main actor Haruma Miura instead … those sexy lips she said).  I had no idea what “Sky Of Love” was about.  I wasn’t even sure if it was a tear jerking movie at all.  All I knew was that the novel that the movie was based upon was once featured on paper late last year.  A cell-phone novel that took the Japanese market by storm.  I read that the cell-phone novel genre tends to have short sentences (hence a rather short and engaging plot development?) and chided by the old school novelists.  Initially, this cell-phone novel was hosted in one of the Japanese websites amongst many others.  I guess if the story is good, it doesn’t matter where it started.

In a few short and vague words, “Sky of Love” is about a young girl falling in love for the first time, vowed not to fall in love again, and found courage to love someone forever.  Cynthia criticize this particular genre as something that comes straight from a template; every Japanese or Korean tear jerking movie tells the same story.  I do agree that they are all there to basically jerk your tears.  But if you look at the typical Hollywood action thriller or romance or any type of mainstream movie, there are always three stages of the plot: the development, the conflict, and the resolution.  I learned that from the PC game “The Movies” (hey, geeks can be quite ‘knowledgeable’ by playing games too you know!).

Sometimes I ask myself, why do I love the Japanese or Korean or Thai horror movies if I don’t really scream that much?  Or why do I love the Japanese or Korean romance drama if I don’t really cry?  Anyway, Cynthia in her own words told me that she cried till she got a headache.  TK used the same amount of tissue paper as Cynthia for a totally different reason (running nose … ha ha ha).  I am not sure what TK’s friend makes out of the movie.  I may be bias.  I personally like this movie very much – both the storyline and the acting.  Predictable storyline most of the time, there are some rare moments that delight and surprise.

This movie reminded me of my kind of guy during high school – cool rebellious (but cute) type. And the movie is relevant to today’s situation where mobile phone plays a very important part.

I don’t know which one jerks my tears more: the sad storyline; the fact that almost all japanese and korean drama movies follow the same template; or regardless i know how the story is going to be, i still cry anyway. ::sob sob::

Cynthia – Your kind of guy eh? *Ahem* Anyway, I forgot to mention the part about mobile phone when writing the review. Also, I love the China doll hairstyle too! So pretty. I think not everyone can carry that style off nicely.

Im just watched this film today (07.05.08). Personally this japanese film is really touched and full with tears.

Personally im going to buy one original copy of this film as my collection.

5 star for this film… story line superb… background music always match with the scene…

Thank You.

Shahreil – I am so with you on this one and am glad that you enjoy the movie as much as I do. “Sky of Love” is certainly one of those movies that I would love to add to my own collection too.

Thanks for dropping by my site. Take care.

i watched it last night, damn i cried in the cinema like nobody’s business. though is a very simple story – typical kind of Jap movies, but i was touched.

Soo – Wow … I can imagine. That show can be very emotional. At times it is good to watch a show that touches our hearts rather than getting entertained and leaving the theatre feeling empty ya?

heheh.. okok … basicaaly i watch any movies that is nice. 🙂 not only jap or kor. seldom have guys that so into jap/kor movies. romance somemore.. wakakak…

this show is really very nice! jus watched this afternoon & i cried damn lot & i’m still tempted to watch again but i’m afraid that i’ll cry like no tmr. =X I even tried to hold back my tears when i watched their OST MV. But i’ll get the dvd as collection as well. heh

i m searching the dvd around !! how come i couldnt find it!?!?! i wanna watch again.

i told my fren about the story the other day in a restaurant while we r having dinner, she cried too. [oh man… just listen to me only ! i m not a good storyteller… but the story is really sad… ]

soo: may i knw u’re frm which country? i’ve tried looking for them in ebay but there’s a seller in US selling. Perhaps u can check it out! I might be going to stores outside to try my luck. Hmmm..

Sophisticated, Soo – Hey there … It is a darn sad story I agree. But also a very good one, from what I remember. The part on the baby left a deep impression to me.

Gosh, I also want to watch it again!

I personally wouldn’t buy Japanese DVD from eBay because there is no way to tell if they are the real thing and come with the subtitles. I think they are still not releasing it because at some locations, they may still air it.

I visited the online HMV website last night and they are not selling. I am very sure they will sell it like any other foreign movies. It is just a matter of time.

Wait a bit more, OK? 🙂

in fact every part of the movie also made me cried like hell yesterday.. i can’t resist this movie seriously. watched ’em twice ytd & gottan swollen lids today. heh. so where u’re frm wildfrid? i’m from sg. =)

Sophisticated – Watched twice?! Wow. I think there is a Korean movie coming up this 22nd (BoA is in it?).

I too am from Singapore! Thanks for dropping by my site and I will certainly drop by yours. Have a good weekend!

Sophisticated – OK, I will certainly check it out (there is a dog inside I think and I bet it is going to be a sad story) and let you all know!

at first i smiled as hiro and mika were so cute together but when the movie hit tthe cancer part,it was really heartbreaking.yeah,i totally agreed the part where hiro was badly fell sick, the acting wasn’t really convincing..but,i still love the movie.

i have the DVD already..my friend bought it for me from Japan.Luckily i have a dear friend that study there.I am from Malaysia and i don’t really think i ever saw Koizora in the store, but maybe i just didn’t looked hard enough..if u are desperate to watch it,this month Astro will be showing it at Movie Channel.so,all u need is to subscribe it. Good Luck.. 🙂

hey soo..good for u..so have u watched it?sad ain’t it?..don’t tell me u didn’t shed any tears..hahaha..if u want to watch a nice Korean movie for change, try Sad Movie.. 🙂 have fun watching..

i didn’t mean koizora..of course wilfrid ord watched it (koizora)..i mean sad movie..he doesn’t seem to watch it yet..hehehe..sori for the misunderstanding.

Haniruz & So – Astro sounds like a pretty cool channel eh? Here in Singapore we have like so many channels (read: need to pay to subscribe) and most of the time I don’t know when they are showing what (the magazine that publish the timing is very poorly done).

OK. Putting “Sad Movie” onto my to-do list! Thanks for the recommendation. Oh by the way, I am heading to PJ Malaysia next month for a business trip! Yay.

This film made me cry loads and loads i cryed in every part i am really into romance films such as zettai kareshi <3 but this one really made me feel soo sorry for everyone in the movie i really have strong feelings for it and to hear its a true story!! wow :'( i loved it so much! 10/10! i’m totally gonna find a japan bf just like hiro but not dieing :(:'(

I was really moved by this film. It is truly inspirational and despite all the hard times, Mika is still living life. I just wonder, if there is any way to read the novel online? If anyone knows please so share ! =)

Wilfrid- I would recommend 1 Litre of Tears. Its another inspirational Japanese movie. It would move you to tears. I would say Koizora and 1 Litre of Tears are by far the most poignant and tear jerking movies i have come across so far.

Jun – Thanks for the recommendation. I have heard and read about 1 Litre of Tears but haven’t got the chance to get the DVD. Perhaps I shall add it to my to-do list!

The film is an adaptation from a cell-phone novel that was published online. Can you read Japanese? I am not aware of a English translation as of today.

i watched Sad Movie the other day. is kinda sad at the end of the shows only. but not too bad for the whole show.

1 litre of tears is good, wilfrid u should watch it. i bought it quite sometime, haven’t got the time to watch it yet.
