The packaging of this new product I’ve gladly purchased without a single thought right after this rather insignificant, vastly unfortunate incident of mine has the stickers of “Save Your Life” pasted everywhere. I am not sure if this marketing tag line over dramatized the magnitude of the potential repercussion of not having it. But I got the drift.
One lesson I’ve relearned from the following two frequently appeared excuses in my head …
- It only happens to someone else (whatever it is)
- There is always tomorrow
… is: action on the decision I’ve made today after weighing all the risks, consequences, and cost.
There is no point, I think, to cry over spilt milk. Sure, we all hate to rework or to do the same thing again. But since I have to do it again anyway, I take it as an opportunity to do a better job. As for what’s lost, it’s lost. Move on.
On a side note, I have no idea why I am so averse to “new” technologies. I have yet to try webcam and I still have no idea what Skype is about. I always have this impression that backing up data is a pain. In fact, this new product Maxtor OneTouch (see picture above) is really what it is: backing up my data with one touch. Even better, it can be set as a scheduled task that runs behind the scene. And I can use it to back up the data from multiple computers, with one touch.
OK. This thing is going to “Save My Life” should my hard disks die on me again.

I do not like doing back ups (just not a routine for me) so obviously my computer died on me before! We have the OneTouch too..but it’s with the desktop, not the laptop! Maybe need to get another mobile harddisk…hahahahha!
Maybe the whole PC techno is a conspiracy! You get the main workhorse but have to get other accessories to maintain it and enable it to perform full functions…without dying abruptly!
Tigerfish – Oh, I am so with you on this. There are so many failure points when it comes to technology and we need to keep buying, keep fixing. Take computer virus as an example, I still can’t believe that I am paying every year to protect my computer against artificial viruses.
i dislike backups too! never well with that. always randomly burning some files into a CD (normally only when the laptop is having some problems) and thats all. sometimes i jus email myself some of the files that i deem important, or upload my photos online. But still will encounter problems such as- cant find the email when I need the file or online photo albums website closing down. Bleah!
So sorry that you lost your files..
Maybe Tigerfish is right – someone somewhere has access to all the computers in the world, and they decide which ones to crash at a particular time… Very “big brother”-ish..
Maybe you should consider getting this instead of getting backup. Access your files via SMB, HTTP, etc
Best thing, it has Raid 5 with hotstandby. Solve all your problems. everything u run out of hard disk, either add new disk or swap out to a bigger disk

Si Ying – You know what? The way you back up your stuffs is exactly the same way I have been doing for years (including the emails)! But I guess the only online space I can reasonably trust is my own site. You are right. At times these online sites do close down.
Cynthia – Just my luck, I think. Just my luck … ha ha ha.
Kiat – Oh man. That looks complex. Thanks for the info though. I have a feeling that Cynthia is less than thrilled to have this bulky thingy placed in our home!
OK. Let me take a close look … especially I may use up the 500GB of backup space soon.
Oh, you have to buy “insurance” for the computer so when the computer is sick (with a virus), it gets attended too!? Sounds like the health care system in some countries like the US of A! LOL! That’s competition btw technology and the human race – trying to see who is smarter in “beating” each other! Sigh…..

Well you can consider this. Comes with 0 drives. You can start with simple 1 disk and slowly upgrade.
This would be something that I would like to get in the future if when i move towards digital streaming. I’ll convert most of my CDs into FLAC format, dump into a NAS device and stream into a Squeezebox (http://www.slimdevices.com/). No more digging through my piles of CDs for search for a particular album or track
Tigerfish – I like your analogy. I surely haven’t thought of it that way.
But I still don’t like paying for virus protection though … lol.
Kiat – Wow … it certainly looks very pretty! OK. I can be so superficial at times … ha ha ha.
I am just wondering. Why would I want to raid the backup drive? I mean … what is the likelihood that both the backup drive and my computer hard disk – touch wood – die at the same time?!
it’s not a “backup” server. it’s acting more like a file server appliance
Kiat – The idea does sound very enticing. Certainly no idea of the technical details you mentioned. Fear not. I will definitely ask you to drop by if I do get such a thingy. Even better. You should get one and demo to me 🙂
[…] Panic! I called my friends at the last minute to see who could accompany me. Phew! Those Maxtor hot backup devices do save my life as advertised. My data is all saved. I wish Bill Gate has the brain size of […]
